Emma Yi is a current student at The City College of New York pursuing her second master degree of fine art with the first one as a master of communication. As an independent video artist and photographer, Emma’s films are based on post-structural theory, conceptual and reveal conflicts inherent to human nature, functions of objects, hidden power and social construction. These conflicts are uncovered through utilizing and de-familiarizing crucial moments of everyday life and selecting the nonprofessionals as actors to capture more natural expression.
Masks Inside – Gisella, Emma Yi, 2017
Consisting of 6 time-based and independent chapters, Masks Inside discusses the concept of multiple personality from another angle: Everyone has multiple personalities based on different parts of selves. It can be an immediate response to the fixed environment or situation; an influenced mind by surrounded culture; an unconscious thinking or performativity; or a conscious treatment for self. Named after the main character (e.g. “Gisella,” etc.). Each story examines subjects’ different behaviors according to their personalities and explores issues including gender, language, psychology and space.
Masks Inside – Yue, Emma Yi, 2017
The chapter of “Yue” is inspired by a sociological research in 1964. The tested subjects, a group of Japanese women who married, immigrated and raised families in America gave different even opposite answers to the same question when they answered it in English compared with using their mother language. Emma recreated this study into a documentary-style interview with a Chinese international student to illustrate that language plays a salient role in people’s personality and identity.
Masks Inside – Jenny, Emma Yi, 2017
When time and the space transfer from online to the real world, indoors to outdoors, the six independent chapters of Mask Inside complement each other and create a consolidated perspective: humans are society creatures whose personalities will be reframed as a reaction to the social environment. On the other hand, they also have the subjective initiative to alter their personalities according to their own will. By these precise and multi-layered ways, Emma deconstructs things that are ingrained in people’s minds, involves the audience in a way that is often empathic.
